Central Heating Repairs: What to Do When Your Heating Stops Working

When your central heating stops working, the problem can quickly affect your comfort, routine and peace of mind. In many cases, the cause is simple, such as an incorrect thermostat setting or low boiler pressure. However, some faults require prompt attention from a trained professional.

If you smell gas in Great Britain:

  1. Do not use electrical switches, naked flames or mobile phones inside the property.

  2. Open doors and windows if you can do so safely.

  3. Turn off the gas supply at the meter if it is safe to reach.

  4. Leave the property and keep everyone away from the affected area.

  5. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside.

In Northern Ireland, call 0800 002 001. If anyone has serious symptoms that may indicate carbon monoxide poisoning, call 999. The NHS carbon monoxide guidance provides further information about symptoms and the action to take.

Do not use the boiler again until it has been checked by a suitably qualified professional. Gas appliance work must be completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Check the Thermostat and Heating Controls

A thermostat, programmer or smart heating control that is switched off can make it appear that the boiler has failed.

Ensure that:

  • The thermostat is set to a temperature above the current room temperature.

  • The heating is set to “on” or “constant” for testing.

  • The programmer clock displays the correct time.

  • The heating schedule has not changed after a power cut.

  • A wireless thermostat has working batteries.

  • A smart thermostat is connected to its receiver and home network where required.

Check the Boiler Power Supply

Look at the boiler display and check whether it has power. If the display is blank:

  • Check the boiler’s local isolation switch or fused spur.

  • Check whether a circuit breaker has tripped.

  • Confirm that the wider property has electricity.

  • Check whether the boiler clock or controls have reset.

If the electrical supply repeatedly trips, do not keep switching it back on. Repeated trips may indicate an electrical fault, water ingress or a problem with the boiler’s internal components. Arrange an assessment by a qualified heating professional or electrician.

Check Boiler Pressure Safely

Low system pressure is a common reason for a boiler to stop operating. Most sealed central-heating systems operate at approximately 1.0 to 1.5 bar when cold, although you should always follow the instructions for your specific boiler.

Check the pressure gauge or digital display. If it is below the recommended range, the system may need repressurising through its filling loop.

Only attempt this if you understand your boiler instructions and feel confident:

  1. Switch the boiler off and allow it to cool if necessary.

  2. Locate the filling loop, usually beneath the boiler.

  3. Open the valves slowly while watching the pressure display.

  4. Stop when the pressure reaches the manufacturer’s recommended range.

  5. Close the valves fully and restart the boiler according to its instructions.

Check for a Frozen Condensate Pipe

During very cold weather, the external condensate pipe connected to a condensing boiler can freeze. This may cause the boiler to lock out and leave you without heating or hot water.

The pipe is usually a small white or grey plastic pipe that runs from the boiler through an external wall towards a drain. Look for visible ice or a section of pipe that feels frozen.

If you are confident that the condensate pipe is frozen, you may be able to thaw it safely by:

  • Applying a warm cloth to the pipe.

  • Pouring warm water over the affected section.

  • Avoiding boiling water, which can damage plastic pipework or cause burns.

  • Following the boiler manufacturer’s reset instructions after thawing.

If the boiler does not restart, the pipe freezes repeatedly or you cannot safely access it, contact a professional. A trained technician can check the pipe’s position, insulation and drainage arrangement to help prevent the problem returning.
